Camp Fire’s Middle School Program serves 270 students annually in the Portland Public and Reynolds School Districts. We believe our students have the abilities to achieve their goals and determine their own means to success. Our onsite school-based program staff work with students from September through May, providing mentoring and academic enrichment throughout the school year.
Our onsite program staff are committed to our students and devoted to their growth.
Our mentoring is focused on identity development, interpersonal relationships, goal setting, conflict resolution, and finding and exploring students’ “sparks,” which are passions that motivate them every day such as sports, art, science, helping others, and music. We check in with students about school, their future, and things they are struggling with at home and with friends. We offer resources and strategies for them to think critically about the impact they have on themselves and their community.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
The Middle School Program builds skills progressively over three distinct program phases. Quarter one focuses on community building and identity development by creating a welcoming space, exploring self-identity and honoring student’s individual backgrounds, experiences and strengths. Quarter two focuses on social justice education and (de)constructing leadership by exploring group relationships and strengths, systems of oppression, as well as the power of collective action. Focus in the third quarter turns outward via community-based learning, advocacy, and activism. Here students interact closely with organizations making change in their local neighborhoods, collectively learning how to work with and positively impact their community.
Developed in 2011 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the Middle School Program is currently active in five schools; four in Portland Public Schools and one in Reynolds School District.
