Maria Velez, Site Supervisor
Maria Velez has recently served four years in the Peace Corps serving both the Republic of Georgia and Nicaragua. While meeting new people and eating delicious food, she also co-taught English to 300 primary and secondary students and generated funds for various community development projects. Before her travels, she also had the pleasure to work at the Tenement Museum in New York City ensuring museum staff provided fun educational programming for all visitors. Maria looks forward to the school year with Camp Fire and attacking interesting local food carts. |

Jesse Waldman, Site Instructor
Jesse moved to Portland from New York City in 2009 after graduating with a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Columbia University. He began working with youth as a means of participating in the history of his North Portland neighborhood. Two years later, he believes even more strongly in education as a means of empowerment and social change, and is excited to continue this work with Camp Fire Columbia’s middle school team. Jesse is a classically trained pianist, plays keyboard and accordion in two bands, and enjoys working in his garden. |
