Lizards, Pirates, and Wizards!

The last few weeks at CSS Camp Fire has been very fun and busy. We finished up our first spring clubs with a bang. In our pirate club the students made pirate outfits, boats, treasure maps and a 6 foot replica of a pirate boat. The magic/wizard club also did some cool activities. (more...)

Asian Art

This week in Wild Papyrus the paper crafts students looked to East Asian culture for artistic inspiration. The kids decorated lanterns using a combination of watercolor and collaged tissue paper. Freeze Dance

Ever wake up in the morning with ants in your pants? Believe it or not, this happens to kids ages 5-7 almost every morning! So, to get those wiggles out today we played a game called Freeze Dance. Using the radio as a sound source the students danced when the music was ON and froze, in place, when the music was OFF.
Shake, wiggle, wiggle, shake…. FREEZE!

Mosaics and Asian Art

This week students used recycled paper to create mosaics. Mosaics are 2-dimensional pictures created from small chunks of glass laid in grout, typically on a floor, wall or ceiling, but sometimes presented as a stand-alone object as a wall hanging. Wild Papyrus students used paper to create images of their own design. Next week we'll be looking to Eastern Asia for inspiration... (more...)
Superheroes

To celebrate Earth Day, on Wednesday, the kids at Hollyrood turned themselves into superheros that worked to save the earth. Students brainstormed environmental issues and envisioned themselves as solution oriented heroes... (more...)

Making Trails

Young Navigators are learning to make their own trails. This week we've learned about compasses, what they are and how they work. In the coming week we'll use them to move through our space and learn to give directions to each other using north, south, east and west instead of left, right, forward and backward.

New Clubs

Sports Club is for kindergarten and 1st graders who like to be active. Kids work and play hard in this club. Sports Club teaches kids how to tune into their personal best, first focusing on strength in self and sportsmanship. Once students gain confidence and skills they'll engage in active games including: basketball, Hawaiian football, baseball, and soccer over the course of the spring term.
Another club, new for the spring term is Storytelling with Art. Kids in this club look to children's authors and illustrators for inspiration for a variety of art projects including: book making, pottery, collage, sculpture, and writing activities.

Young Navigators

Navigating the world is a tough thing to do at any age. That's why in the Morning Program at Hollyrood we are learning about maps. Just this week we started a new club called Young Navigators. Kids in this club know how to read basic maps; they understand that keys and legends that tell us more about the map we're looking at. In the coming weeks each Young Navigator will receive their own working compass and will get to decorate its wooden exterior using markers and paints...

Late Start

The blogging club

The blogging club has been working on blogging. I have learned that there are a lot of blogging web sites. Some of the similarities are that they all have a space for the title and a space for the words. I like to write blogs because a lot of people get to read it.

Airplanes

Camp Fire at CSS just finished a great month of clubs. We had a wonderful Chess Club were students learned strategies and worked on showing good sportsmanship. We even had a few of our students who were new to chess in the beginning gain strong skill in chess. (more...)
